Apple wants to challenge the best workout apps with Apple Fitness Plus, a subscription service designed for the Apple Watch, even though it works with other devices like the iPhone. The $9.99-a-month service offers guided workouts, and we've found that Apple Fitness Plus gets better the longer you stick with it.
Still, if Apple's service isn't quite what you had in mind, you've got other options. Take a look at our picks for the best workout apps to to find a program that fits in with your exercise goals and daily routines.
What are the best workout apps?
One of our favorite workout apps is no more, as Fitbit is shutting down Fitbit Coach, rolling the app's workout features into the main Fitbit app, which you'll be able to access with a Fitbit Premium membership. Fortunately, PEAR Personal Fitness Coach, Kienticoach and 30 Day Fitness offer the kind of guided instructions you would have gotten from Fitbit Coach. And iOS owners can turn to Onyx, which uses the iPhone's front camera to give you feedback on your exercise form.
If you're looking for apps that chart out an exercise routine for you, Workout Trainer, Shred and Sworkit can be your guide. Other apps in this guide promise a library of different exercises — these include ASIC Studio, Sweat and Daily Burn's app. We also selected apps that focus on very specific activities, including yoga (Glo), weight training (JEFIT), or high-intensity interval training (8Fit). Other apps, such as Centr, tackle meal planning and meditation as well as fitness.
We'd encourage beginners to try something like Seven, which emphasizes short, regular workouts. Wakeout is another good app for low-key exercises you can do throughout the day during breaks from work.

How to choose the best workout app
The best workout app for you covers the exercises you're interested in doing at a level that's accessible to you. Ideally, a good fitness app will support multiple levels of expertise so that as you get fitter and more comfortable, you can push yourself to the next level.
While a handful of apps are free, many of these workout apps require a subscription. Take advantage of any trial period and then try a monthly subscription to see if the app meets your needs. If you like what you see, you can always switch to an annual subscription, which usually lowers your monthly cost.
If you're someone who likes to mix up your workout routines regularly, it might be a good idea to look for a well-rounded workout app that has a good mix of workouts to suit your mood and prevent you from regretting your monthly subscription.
Several of the options on our best workout apps list will log your exercise data. If you're an iPhone user, pay special attention to any apps that integrate with the built-in Health app on your phone.
